Well this is a very general but important question which comes in the mind of every aspiring as well as professional writer at some point or the other.
What to write?
Most of us starts a story with an idea in mind and with great enthusiasm but soon after writing few pages sometimes we get stuck and eventually loose enthusiasm. This condition is known as Writer's Block. This could be avoided if we take care of a couple of points every time we write-
1] Write only when you feel like- a free mind is much more creative than a exhaustive one.
2] Don't burden yourself with thoughts of finishing your projects sooner than your comfort zone. Because if you do so, it will greatly affect your creativity.
3] Don't be mislead by creativity of others. Believe in your own.
Usually the writing is a reflection of writer's mind. It dosen't mean that a writer have to be a criminal or a murderer to write a mystery novel. What i mean is, writing needs a writer to connects him/herself strongly to the characters and he/she should be able to feel them and then only the audience could connect the chanracters.
